Experience / Representative Matters

During his 30 year legal career, Jim has worked on various patent and IP-related legal matters for large technology companies such as IBM, VISA, Hewlett-Packard, Apple Computer, Cypress Semiconductor, Cisco Systems, Sun Microsystems, Nokia, Proctor & Gamble, CH2M Hill and Toyota. Jim has also assisted mid-sized technology companies with IP issues, as well as with negotiating Agreements and other general legal issues.

  • Agreement/Contract preparation - working with our client’s Management teams, we assist with analysis, preparation and negotiation of Agreements/Contracts relating to our client’s relationships with their customers, vendors or other third-parties.

  • Patent Portfolio Strategy and Development – working with engineers, scientists and innovators, we prepare, file and prosecute U.S and foreign patent applications in technology areas such as electrical, mechanical, software, clean energy, computer-controlled systems, consumer products, and other technologies.

  • Risk Assessment/Landscape Analysis of Third-Party Patents – advising our clients to help manage patent infringement risks by analyzing patents held by competitors or other third parties.

  • Patent Opinions – we render formal and informal opinions regarding patent infringement and patent validity for clients.

  • Patent Litigation Support – we assist and advise clients on patent litigation strategy and substance, both with patent enforcement and defense.

  • Mergers & Acquisitions IP Diligence and Support – we assist clients with analysis of strengths and weaknesses of IP portfolios of potential acquisition target companies.

  • Patent Licensing – we assist clients with in-bound and out-bound patent and IP licensing.

  • Trade Secret Program Development – we advise clients on management and protection of proprietary technologies and trade secrets.  

  • Patent and Trademark Infringement Disputes – we advise various clients on IP litigation enforcement and defense, and other IP-related litigation issues.

Jim is the founder of Red Rocks Law and an attorney with over 30 years of experience including as a partner with various international and large regional law firms (Am Law 100/Am Law 200). Jim was also named “Lawyer of the Year” for Patent Law in Colorado by Best Lawyers in America in 2013.

Jim received his law degree from Indiana University School of Law Bloomington, and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from The Ohio State University.  Prior to becoming a lawyer, Jim worked as a Design Engineer for the Advanced Product Development Group (Audio and Communications Systems) for Delco Electronics Corporation, formerly a subsidiary of General Motors.

Community Involvement

Jim is a graduate of Leadership Denver (2011), and served on the Board of Directors for the Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation. He also served on the Boards of the Center for Inclusive Design and Engineering (University of Colorado Denver), Mi Casa Resource Center, the Denver Urban Debate League, and Colorado Lawyers for the Arts.  He was inducted into the “Hall of Fame” by the Denver Urban Debate League in recognition of his service to the organization.

Jim previously served as Chair of the Board of the Center for Legal Inclusiveness. He has also served for 6 years on the Board of Directors for the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Denver, where he was twice named “Board Member of the Year.”

Red Rocks Law actively volunteers and supports various non-profits in Colorado. Jim also has volunteered by teaching introductory computer coding to elementary school students.
